Principal's Update 5/13/20
Hello West Families-
As we enter the month of May and our 5th week of Distance Learning I hope you are doing well. It has been nice to hear from teachers how much they are enjoying meeting up with your kids through Google Meet or Zoom, although it can never replace seeing them face to face. I know that Distance Learning has proven challenging at times and I applaud your student’s perseverance to complete and turn in assignments during this unprecedented time. Please continue to encourage your student to turn in as many assignments as possible to keep their academic learning moving forward.
With Memorial Day approaching, we will begin the process of closing out the 2019/2020 school year and preparing for the next.
We will have students return Chromebooks, Textbooks, and any other school property on June 1st and 2nd. The process will be similar to when we distributed Chromebooks and materials, and we will provide you with more details as the day approaches. If your student still has personal property at school, please contact your student’s homeroom teacher or call the school office at 347-3123 to make arrangements to pick up those items.
5th Grade Teacher Requests
In other news, we will be accepting Teacher Requests for 5th Grade for the 2020/2021 school year the week of May 18th-22nd. Paper copies will be available in front of the school during office hours and we will also make the form available on our website.
8th Grade Graduation Class T-shirts
We have ordered a class shirt for our graduates. They will be available for pick up on Monday, May 18th from 9:00am-1:00pm on a drive thru basis only. Please use the student drop off/pick up to drive thru and get your t-shirt.
8th Grade Panoramic Picture
It has been a long standing tradition for the 8th grade class to take a panoramic picture that will hang in Alumni Hall. We have arranged for the Class of 2020 to also participate in this tradition, although it will be accomplished very differently. Individual student pictures will be imported into the panoramic picture. We will be coordinating the panoramic picture and will be following all state guidelines for social distancing and gatherings. This will be accomplished on a drive thru basis where students will be asked to wait in their car until directed by a staff member to get out and have their picture taken. Parents will need to stay in their vehicle until their student is finished getting their picture taken, and leave campus immediately when done. This will definitely be a picture to remember! Individual student pictures will be taken on Wednesday, May 20th. Student with the last name beginning with the letters A-L, will have their picture taken between 9:00 am -10:00 am and M-Z between 10:00am-11:00am.
8th Grade Graduation
The staff have been working on ways to celebrate and honor the hard work and accomplishments of all of our graduates and also recognize our Valedictorians, Salutatorian, and student award winners. Present restrictions do not allow us to hold a traditional graduation ceremony, so like other districts we will be holding a virtual ceremony, trying to include as many elements of a traditional ceremony as possible. At this time our plans include the following:
- Facebook Live Virtual Graduation Ceremony.
- Drive thru car parade of graduates, at which time they will receive their diploma, a graduation program, and any awards they have received. Drive thru times will be assigned alphabetically.
- We will also have a school board member and a photographer present at the car parade to hand out diplomas and take a graduation picture.
- Graduates will also receive a goodie bag donated by The Elegant Bean.
The virtual Graduation Ceremony will take place on Friday, June 5th at 9:00 am, followed by the car parade which will begin at 10:30 am. More information and details will be provided as plans are finalized.
We will continue to send out updates, so please keep checking your emails, text, and phone messages, as well as our school website for information about your student’s education at West Cottonwood.
